The European Commission Network on Public Administration and Governance recently held a two-day conference in Prague on the theme of strategic governance in the public sector. The event was hosted by the Czech Republic. Mr. D. Skorna, chair of the Network, delivered the opening keynote.

A discussion paper entitled Strategic Management in the Public Sector was prepared   by Benedict Wauters, coordinator of the Network.  The conference benefited from presentations by representatives of the Czech Republic, Romania, the Netherlands, Finland and the European Union. Ms. Jocelyne Bourgon, leader of the New Synthesis Initiative and President of PGI, opened the second day with a presentation entitled “Strategic government, Strategic thinking, Strategic management”. She commented on presentations and facilitated the discussions on the second day.

The NS framework proved relevant to integrating strategic thinking, operational priority setting, resource allocation planning and future work.

The Network on Public Administration and Governance (PAG) is “dedicated to helping Member States enhance the institutional capacity of their public authorities” (www.ec.europa.eu). Future collaboration between the Network and PGI is envisaged.
